DeWanna Bonner moves into fifth all-time in scoring in WNBA history
Uncasville, CT (May 14, 2023)- Tonight, the Connecticut Sun defeated the Indiana Fever, 92-71, in their season opener at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sun broke the game open in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Fever 27-14 in the final ten minutes of the contest.
DeWanna Bonner led all Sun scorers with 20 points, along with six rebounds, one assist and one steal in the win. The 14-year league veteran moved into fifth all-time in scoring in WNBA history, passing Candice Dupree. She now has 6,901 points in her career.
Sun forward Alyssa Thomas recorded her ninth career regular season triple-double and her 12th career triple-double (three postseason triple-doubles) with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists on the night.
Guards DiJonai Carrington and Ty Harris made their first regular season starts for the Sun and both notched 16 points in the win. Additionally, Carrington tallied 14 of her 16 points in the second quarter.
Rachel Banham made her regular season return for Connecticut, recording 10 points in 23 minutes off the bench. Brionna Jones added eight points, three rebounds, one steal and one block in her first regular season game since missing all but 13 contests in 2023 with a torn Achilles.
Indiana was led by Caitlin Clark who notched 20 points, going 5-15 from the field. The Sun forced Clark into 10 turnovers, which marks the most turnovers in a game in Fever history (previously held by seven other Fever players- 8 TOs) and the most turnovers in a debut game in WNBA history (previously held by Cynthia Cooper-Dyke- 9 TOs).
The Sun shot 48.5% (32-66) from the field, while the Fever shot 48% (24-50) from the floor. Connecticut forced Indiana into 25 turnovers on the night.
The attendance for the evening was a sellout with a total of 8,910 fans in the building. This marks the first home opener sellout since the Sun’s first home opener in 2003.
